Off-Duty Meeting
Off-Duty Meeting
I walked down the street before spying Rosa entering her favorite coffee shop. I followed her slipping in-between people before finding my way through the entrance. The place was bright, homey, the walls lined with a pink that mimicked Rosa's hair. It was tacky, but where else did I expect her to go? She sat down before I approached her table with my own coffee and donut in hand. I also decided to get some glazed donut holes, the sweetness of life after all. I bit into my donut feeling the sweet jelly which tasted of strawberry, spread out and coat my tongue. I entirely lost my train of thought before seeing Rosa now staring at me. "What? I can't like donuts?" I asked with my best mock offense. She rolled her eyes before she pushed the chair across the table out using her foot. "I guess you're still open to conversation." "You're trying to reason with me, obviously you aren't incapable of discussion". I sat down across from her and crossed my left leg over my right. "I did most of the talking last time... Why don't we pick up where we left off." I said, taking a sip of my coffee. "What do you want to hear?" She said, sighing. "You heard me say my beliefs, what are yours?" I said finishing off my donut and picked out a donut hole, throwing it into my mouth and chewing as I waited for her to begin.
"All life is precious. I don't understand how you can just... Snuff it out." She said. "If I hadn't that family would've still been afraid for their lives. That man has terrible plans. You saw his torture set". She grimaced. "What about that killer then? He was scared, and he was afraid, why did you kill him?" "Would he have listened to the lady with pink hair ask him to put his gun down? Would he have listened to words?" "Have you ever even tried words...?" "Of course I have, but sometimes actions need consequences." "For someone who spoke about the wrongs of the rules set by the wealthy... You seem to follow them..." "Sometimes, the bad is tolerable." "..." "After all, you let me live, didn't you"? She froze as recollection flooded in her eyes. "I wasn't going to kill you..." "You weighed my life against that official's, and who did you choose? Me." I said tossing another donut hole into my mouth. "You don't have much to say, do you, Rosa?" I said putting my hands together. "You agree with me, don't you? But you'd never admit it". I said standing up. "I won't make you admit it. but it's obvious" "I don't, I really don't, Vertis. What you do is monstrous. You throw people's lives away like they're nothing. It's detestable. These people can be fixed, I know they can". I laughed loudly. "When you find me a case of that, I'll believe it! Those in power, don't want to change, Rosa. Why won't you see that?" "Why can't we see the good in people?" "I do, but there is only so many chances a person can have". Rosa slammed her hands against the table as she stood. "And why are you judge of right and wrong here?" She said her voice hardly hiding her frustration. "And the juries are? They're humans too. lawyers use emotions to get their verdict, constantly. They don't see it first hand, what's to stop a bribe from halting the trial?" "The judge's morals-!" "And they are but mortal. Humans seek short term gratification." "Not everyone does!" "Show me, one." "Me!" "You assume you can talk a culprit down, you assume a simple slap on the wrist will stop everything." I explained my fist clenching as I stood as well. "We do not live, IN A STORY BOOK!" I yelled slamming my hand against the table. We both stared at each other poised to pounce like wild animals. I straightened myself letting out an exhale before walking past Rosa and through the crowd of onlookers no doubt expecting us rip each other apart. "See you at home..." I said before seeing one of Rosa's friends staring me up and down before I grinned. "Love." I added before walking out the door.
